When trying to read a floppy disk with information on it
windows xp pro says the drive needs formatted. but will
work on other systems and I do not want to format the
disk because of the information on it.
I read a response on that subject earlier today in a different
newsgroup, although I'll admit I wasn't paying that close attention.
It isn't that there's a problem with the disk, just that XP can't read
it because of some kind of minor changes that have occurred. The gist
seemed to be that a disk formatted by XP will be accepted by a machine
using an earlier type of Windows, but the reverse may not be true.
There was a reference to a Microsoft Knowledge Base page using the
general wording of the error message.
IIRC the easiest solution is to format some blank floppies with the XP
machine, then go to a non-XP computer to dump the contents of the old
floppies into a folder and copy them to the new ones.
