howdy

Knocked up a pc, floopy on bootup gives error, 808 or somethingsimular,
tried several cables, both ways, drives etc.

even took working and tried them but no luck.

Also the cpu fan doesnt work, its a amd400 so does it really need one on top
of the heat sink?

thanks

If the drive light stays on then no matter what the locating lugs on
the floppy are the cable is the wrong way round.Cut of lug on cable at
floppy end and spin it round.Use the 2 end plugs on the cable if it's
a 3 plug floppy cable and try another molex 12v plug from your power
supply as well.
HTH :)

absolutely!
the cpu will get hotter than hell if you don';t use a cpu fan...
however if the heatsink is large enough...the cpu may not actually burn
out...
at least not for a while

I missed the start of this post, so please excuse me if I'm off track
here.
The floppy drive might be dead
is this the original floppy drive and have you seen it working or is
it an old one you got from someone?
Because if not, some of the early 3 1/2 drives were only 720kb maybe
it one of them (just a thought)

Issue:

Floppy disk fail (40) or (80) error.

Additional Information:

The Floppy disk fail (40) or (80) errors are related to the computer floppy drive. If you are looking for information about the hard
disk fail (10), (20) or (80) error message relating to the computer hard disk drive please see issue CH000454.

Cause:

This issue can be caused by any of the following possibilities:

Floppy cable not connected properly
Bad floppy cable
Bad Floppy drive - I/O
Solution:

Floppy cable not connected properly

Verify that the floppy disk drive cable is properly connected. See document CH000277 for additional help and information about
connecting the floppy drive as well as setting it up properly.

If the floppy disk drive light stays on and does not shut off see document CH000278.

Bad floppy cable

If the floppy disk drive appears to be setup properly an the light is not always on it is possible that the floppy drive cable may
be bad. We recommend you visit a local computer hardware store and purchase a new cable.

Bad Floppy drive - I/O

If the issue persists unfortunately it is likely that either the floppy drive is bad or the I/O board or Motherboard is bad. We
recommend you have the contact the computer manufacturer, have the computer serviced or that you replace the floppy drive then the
motherboard if the issue persists.

google didnt throw up anything, but after trying 5+ cables, 4 or 5 drives i
have come to the conclusions its the mobo(can turn it off) or a power issue,
on bootup the motor turns a fraction but no light.
