Floppy Disk Drive Problem

The drive stopped working properly after I installed a brand 160GB Maxtor in
my system to replace my old 20GB drive.

I did a clean install of XP from a new copy I just bought, now the floppy
doesn't work properly - everything else is working great. I have an ABIT
VI7 mobo with 2.6G Pentium HT processor which is enabled. There is 512M DDR
RAM on Board.

The drive is a new Mitsumi with built in USB CF/SM card readers etc.

Using the old XP install on the 20G drive it worked fine. The drive still
works fine on my other XP machine. I've swapped cables too to eliminate
those.

If I click on A: in explorer, the green light comes on, then XP ask me to
insert a floppy. I do, but XP doesn't recognise it.

Device manager says its installed and working all cables are properly
oriented (both cable ends are polarised to prevent this being otherwise).
The drive behaves exactly as you would expect until you try to read the
data.

I have only three ideas, a) the 160G Maxtor affects the floppy config (its
the only hardware change on the board since from the time it stopped
working)
b) Something in this later version of XP config is amiss
c) The mobo floppy controller has failed.

Any help on the most likely cause gratefully received...

TIA

Hi,

Try go to device manager, clcik the floppy disk controller and then highlight the standard floppy drive controller, right click and select uninstall, click apply and OK then reboot. Let windows search and reinstall the floppy driver.

Hope it helps.

I looked at their website and it looks like that is plug and play.
Go to this site and get the uninstaller for the floppy drive.
http://www.mitsumi.com/enduser/1_drivers.html#FDD
Run the uninstaller and reboot your computer and XP should see it.
If you have USB2 make sure you have the latest Service Pack from MS.

Thanks Guys. The (internal) drive has a std FDD connection and a USB lead.
I removed the FDD controller in Device Manager and removed the FDD cable and
unplugged the USB lead. Re-started XP and the FDD can't be seen at all. I
had hoped that the FDD might have a USB interface too.

I tried booting some diagnostics from the floppy which didn't work either,
ruling out XP config, so the finger is pointing at the mobo (oh no!)...

Best Regards

Make sure the connectors are hooked up correctly.
Connect the 34-pin ribbon cable to the interface port on the back of the
floppy drive. The colored stripe on the cable designates pin one. Pin one on
the floppy drive interface port is the pin closest to the drive motor
Also make sure the floppy drive is enabled in your BIOS.
Did you try the floppy on another computer?

The FDD works fine on my other computer. When its plugged in, the drive
light flashes at the right times and I can hear the disk spin, but XP can't
see the disk.
