Floppy Disk Drive not Recognized in XP Pro

I am running Windows XP, Professional Edition. I have a floppy disk drive.
However, even though I place a floppy disk into this drive, when I look in
"My Computer", there is no "A" drive listed.
I have gone into the Device Manager, where I see "Standard Floppy Disk
Controllers." I right clicked on this, and selected "Update Driver". I ran
the Hardware Update Wizard, but this wizard tells me that "The Wizard could
not find a better match for your hardware than the softwared you currently
have installed."
What can I do to have my Floppy Disk Drive recognized by my computer?

although the drive itself could be defective or mis-wired
check first to be sure it's set properly in the bios...
drive A: is normally set to 3.5" 1.44 megs

How do I do that?

When you first boot up, watch the screen closely for a key to press to go
into your BIOS.

My computer calls for pressing the DEL key.
others may use the F11 key.
You didn't say what kind of computer you have.
