Floppy Disk Drive Formatting

When I put a disk in the floppy drive it says that the
disk needs to be formatted and when I try to do this it
says it cannot do this because they are damaged and other
reasons. When I try it on other computers it works fine.
This problem has come about with no apparent reason. The
drive worked when I installed it and now it just doesn't.
Anyone know what to do to make the disk drive read the
disks?

Make sure the cables are seated then replace the floppy drive. They are
cheap, under $20 US.

I have come to the conclusion that there are defective native FD drivers on
some XP disks. Some people have no problems with floppies and others do. The
following link is to a 3 mode driver that seems to have cured my floppy
problems. It is up to you to decide if you care to try it. If it don't work,
just roll back the drivers.

The post is too wordy and the instructions are difficult to follow but, I
have installed the driver and used floppies on a 98 and 2000 machine as well
as my Sony camera.

Great post JAX,
I have been wondering what was up with WinXP
and 1.44 floppy drives for a long time. I have several that do not after
upgrading in a box. Had to buy new ones.

Thanks again,
Kent

I installed XP about 3 months after it was released. I have tried every
suggestion I could find to fix the floppy problems. That has
included changing FD's 3 or 4 times. From what I understand, this is a
recognized XP problem and is supposed to be addressed in SP2. We'll see?
