I know this is going to be a long shot, but I thought I'd give it a go.

I have a whole pile of floppy disks with all sorts of things on them-
pictures, text files, etc., that goes back years and years. I'd like to
transfer them to more permanent CD storage, so what I want to do is copy
them to hard drive and then burn them to CD.

Ideally what the program would do is automatically create a folder, either
with the name of the disk or a default folder name with counter, and then
copy the contents to the folder. Because I have so many disks I would
like to have it start copying after I insert the disk or after a key
press. That way I can be working on something else.

Any thoughts or leads to something like this or similar?

This program saves floppy images to disk:

http://www.woundedmoon.org/win32/floppyimage.html

I doubt that it will create directories though.

If the floppies were not formatted with a label I don't see any way to
auto-create descriptive directories. If they are formatted with volumn
labels it is possible to write a batch file that will extract the
label using the VOL command. After that it's just md and copy.

There is bound to be a freeware macro program that can do this. You
want to be looking for something that can record keystrokes/mouse
movements and play them back.

Here's a program I used once to put about 300 floppies on a CD.
It doesn't make the CD but creates collections for use with your CD
burning program. It's a little slow but gets the job done.

Name: Floppy to CD Archiver
Version: 1.5.3
OS: Windows 9x, ME, 2000 & XP
Size: 1.87Mb

Floppy to CD Archiver

Have you ever found your self with a pile of old disk sets from old
applications like MS Office and Windows 3.11 which you just can't
bring your self to throw away? The easy answer is to burn all your
sets of disks onto one CD for archiving. Using this program will make
it easier to do so.

This simple program asks for how many disks in a set then
automatically reads each disk onto a drive of your choice whilst
automatically splitting the disks into separate folders.

This looks pretty neat. I've still got Win3.1 on floppy disks, I'm not
sure that I will ever install it again. I wonder if it would install off
the CD or if I would have to copy it back to floppies?
This would be really handy if I could talk my brother into giving me his
Sony camera, the one that records straight to floppies.
