Tom

When I logon with a poweruser account or with a normal
user account on my Windwos XP Pro computer I can't get
access to my floppydrive. I get the message access denied.
How can I fix this?

Hello Kelly,
I did what you suggested and unfortunately it didn't
work, the values in the registry for allocatefloppy,
allocatecd-rom and allocatedasd were already set to
0 in [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]. I checked that, before I ran
the regfile and even before I posted my question on this
forum. Anyway in the registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\SeCEdit\Reg
Values\MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows
NT/CurrentVersion/Winlogon/AllocateFloppies I saw that
that value only restricts it to locally logged on users,
but the accounts I tested logged on locally and they
couldn't access a floppy, but they could read cd's and
the registersettings for allocatefloppies and allocatecd-
roms were identical. For allocatedasd you have options:
0|administrators, 1|administrators and powerusers, 2|...
I 'm going to try and make a similar multiple
registervalue in the registrykey for allocatefloppies.

The only other option I can suggest is:

Go to: Start/Run/gpedit.msc/User Configuration/Administrative
Templates/Windows Components/Windows Explorer. In the right pane double
click Hide these specific drives from my computer.

Good luck, Tom and keep us posted.

Hi Kelly, the changes I made in the registry were
succesful, when I set the allocatefloppy to administrators
and powerusers or to administrators and interactif users,
a poweruseraccount can locally access the floppy. However
I noticed that even a regular user could read and write
floppies even when I chose only administrators and
powerusers, so there is something still not quite right.
Anyway, to my great surprise I saw that on another
computer with Windows XP Pro, a normal user account could
access floppies with no problem whatsoever and I checked
the registryvalues, they were identical. The only
difference I noticed are the servicepacks. The one with
the access problems for floppies had none and the other
one had SP 1a and all the hotfixes up to june 2003.
So I 'm first going to install the servicepacks and
patches. I 'll keep you posted. And thanks again for the
replies.
