College uses mix of Win2k & WinXP, some of us have Win98 at home. If we
save files to floppy in 98 or 2K then try to open in XP get message "disk
not formatted, would you like to format?" This is a widespread problem,
seems like a bug in XP but why have MS not fixed it yet? Anyone any
suggestions as to a "fix"?

Hello

TO this day it is still an issue what you may want to do is just
have users email themselves the files that they have to work
ok.

Try this solution for your Floppy drive problems
I actually found a solution from Microsoft. To resolve the problem I had
to use regedit to open the registry look for
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\
{4D36E980-E32511CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}. Delete the
UpperFilters (and LowerFilters if any) Restart PC and all
is well with my floppy drive

Thanks for the reply, will try your suggestion. Also Google searching came
up with this:

which references older posts in this group!
I have an N Vidia chipset m/b so the suggestion about VIA FDD drivers may
not work and don't wan't to reinstall XP without SP1. Am amazed that since
MS is continually releasing various hotfixes and patches that something as
glaring as this has not been addressed.

PS: First time I've used TinyURL, hope it works!

Alvin,
What do these filters look like, I can't find them? Can you point me to
where you found this on MS site?

We're experiencing a similar problem at our school
district. Have you had any replies/solutions?
