I seem to have picked up something on my PC. My screen is constantly
flickering and my system is crashing all too often. I had a similar problem
a couple of years ago but can't remember exactly how I fixed it. I sem to
recall that I did an online Trojan check and that this fixed it but I can't
find a similar programme now, without having to pay to get things deleted. i
actually did buy a programme yesterday (on a 30 day trial). PC Doorguard 3
but it doesn't appear to be working properly and I don't feel very confident
about it. Anybody experience this problem and does anybody have any
suggestions? By the way, this all happened on Thursday when I first got
connected to Broadband.......which may have some relevence.
Thanks in anticipation folks,
Eugene

Of course! this _has_ to be a virus (or the likes) doesn't it!

WTF made you automagically think "virus!" rather than "oh shit, I think my
gfx card is on the way out" or something similar?

People like you bring a smile to my face... yes, you're a joke =)

An alternative suggestion to the video card (which sounds likely) is
you state you just got broadband. If you installed it without a
firewall, the chances of getting hit by a probing worm are high.

Do you have a firewall?

And a very Happy Christmas to you too smartarse!!!!!! If you don't want to

I didn't say it was annoying.. just people always seem to assume that when
something isn't quite right, they have a virus, or other malicious
software running on their box.. when often, this just isn't the case as I
_suspect_ in your case (although obviously, I don't know for sure).

Now.. had you posted something along the lines of "my updated AV detected
foo.bar as (infected with) 'whatever malware'".. sure, I'm sure I, or
someone else could have (at least attempted to) help(ed).. but you, like
many others, just assumed that because something wasn't right.. it was
naturally a virus or other malware.

If you're a mechanic.. and I say "my car won't go forwards".. is that a
problem with the gearbox? clutch? brakes? or just the fact that I've
parked it nose-up against a brick wall? Is it a mechanical problem
(malware) or just something that's "gone wrong"? If I say "when I try and
put it in 1st, it grinds and crunches and doesn't go anywhere".. then
sure.. your mind would probably automatically assume clutch / gearbox..
because something has identified a problem (in this case, a brain.. or in
an IT case, it'd be your AV).

Annoying you weren't.. jumping to conclusions, I believe you were.

IF it is a virus online scanners that are free are
shown below::

download, install and run the "Stinger" program, which you can download from
this website: http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/. Best thing to do is to run it
a couple of time in Windows "safe mode"

Then do an online scan at:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com
and
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm

Also download "Adaware", a free tool to remove the spyware from your
computer. You can download this program from this website:
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download
Please post back any results.

Well thanks for that. You can be polite after all so please excuse my reply
to you. I had reason to suspect a virus because I ran my AVG scan which
showed TWO viruses which it could not quarantine or delete. I ran a Google
search and discovered that these were on my System Restore and that I had to
disable it (to stop them showing up on scans). But, what are they and how do
I know what they are doing to my system if anything. They were titled
"downloader.dyfica". So, taking this into consideration and the fact that
numerous problems have been happening on my system for the past three days
(since I got broadband by the way) ...... what else can I assume?

Right.. sysrestore can't be accessed like this as you've discovered.
Incase you hadn't come across how to do this (don't mean to be patronising
if you have):

<http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001111912274039>

this article should explain it.

Once you have it disabled, you should be able to run an AV scanner again
and delete / quarantine / whatever you want to the files as the sysrestore
should no longer be preventing access.

All I do know is that dyfica is a trojan (rather than a self-replicating
virus) so it's not going to run away infecting your files on its own,
however, being a trojan, it's likely to give the ability to others to
upload whatever files they please to your box.

You can try 'TCPView' which will enable you to view TCP traffic, and
'HyjackThis' which will give lots of information about processes and the
likes (don't be put off by its name).

Hope this info is of some use =)
