I'll start out with saying I'm good with computers and I've been able to
figure out my problems. This one has got me though. I've had zero problems
installing Vista Beta/RC1 on my older machine. It's just on my current
machine that I'm having problems. My current machine is a AMD X2-4800+, Asus
A8N32-Sli, 2GB OCZ, 1 PCI-E Geforce 7900GTX 512MB, Xi-Fi Sound, Raptor X and
Raptor 74GB, Plextor DVD.

I'm installing Vista RC1 on an empty Raptor X. I start installing Vista RC1
from the Dvd in XP. When complete, the system reboots, and gets to the boot
select screen. Vista is selected and then immediately after, I get a black
screen. The system just hangs right there. No HDD activity. I ran the
Vista startup repair utility but it finds no problems. I've run the Vista
compatability check and the only thing it doesn't find information about is
the Nvidia nForce Networking Controller. * I don't even use this, I use
Marvell Yukon Gigabit Ethernet for internet *

This can't be the culprit because I disabled it once in the bios just be
sure with the same results.

I've read all the posts on system hangs during installation and I seem to be
the only one hanging after the boot select screen. If anyone has any ideas
or suggestions please drop a line. Also, if you need any more info on my
setup I can post those too.

Thanks.

I had a similar problem. Except instead of a black screen, i got the vista
green and blue "energy" background and a command promt. My computer didn't
exactly hang, but the installation of RC1 had completly stopped. After a few
rounds of that, now i can't even begin the installation. About 10 seconds
after hitting the "Install Now" button, i get "Windows can not create a
required installation folder" Error Number x00800005 <---- (something similar
to that)

Same problem here. For me it was caused by a nVidia based video card. I
have a FX 5500 & I've seen posts about problems with the FX5200, but not
everyone is having problems. My setup is similar to yours, x2 4600 and an
ASUS board. I was able to finish installation by putting in a really old
nVidia mx400 card. Then I could get the new nVidia drivers but even with
them I can't boot in normal mode-Vista loads but I can't see anything. Just
saw MS has newer drivers but I'm not sure it's worth the trouble anymore.
Would be curious to know what video card you have in the other machine-you
might try swapping them. Good luck-seems MS isn't interested.

Hmmm. Indeed about MS. My old system has a Geforce Ti 4600! Yes, old! But
it works. I may try messing around with the forceware vista beta drivers a
little more, if not I'll try swapping out my cards.

Thanks for the suggestion.
