Flashing of Columns

Why do the columns flash a number of times when I open Windows Mail? Seems
like if I have 5 colums Windows Mail will flsah 5 times. Is this normal?
 
Yes. What you are seeing is the updating of the database and the message
list will appear to flash or flicker while that process is ongoing.
