flashes for a second

My computer was working fine this morning, but this evening when i booted it
isn't wanting to act right. It boots up, but when i click on the start menu
it will flash the menu up for a brief moment then go away. After the
machine sat idle for 10 or 15 minutes it started working. Any ideas on what
is going on with this machine?

I have an Intel P4 3 ghz with 1 gig of ram

Does this still occur if you startup in safe mode if not, run
msconfig and look at what is loading at startup.
[start orb > search > type msconfig in the field > open the startup
tab].
