I purchased a 1 gig USB 2.0 flash drive. "Properties" says it has about 1
gig of memory.
However, I can only write about 500 Megs to the drive before I get a "The
directory or file cannot be created" message and the disk will not write
anymore data.

Is this a fault with the flash drive or is there a data limit built into the
USB drivers?

Try putting saved items into folders. Only so many single items can go in
the root. When you reach that limit, you will face "out of space" issues
even if there is storage space available.
