I have been on the phone all afternoon with both Toshiba and the makers of
my flash drive. Toshiba got me to download a Chipset Utility with no
improvement. Passed me on to higher support. The end result of that was
that they suggested I take it to one of their authorised support agents.
Didn't really want to have to do that as I have only had the laptop for a
couple of weeks, but they thought it may be a bios problem. They were very
helpful as were the makers of the Drive.
In the end I decided to use System Restore working from the earliest point
up to present day. Last night I was working backwards and decided at 2 am
it wasn't going to work. Tonight I got up to 17th January everything fine.
19th Jan and back to the problem. So it is now restored and working fine
with the settings as of 17th Jan. I noticed that at that point of failure
(19th) the things that were different was I had used Internet wizard to set
up my connection, downloaded my AV and Zone Alarm. I now have to set them
back up and try and find where the problem is.
Now that I have settled on the 17th Jan, what happens to the other progs etc
that were installed after the 17th. They must be somewhere as if I wanted
to I notice in System Restore I could go back to today's date if I wanted.
Am I suppose to somehow delete these files and if so where do I find them?
Should I be setting and new Restore point now as well or let it stay as
17th?
Thanks to everyone for all their help up to now.

The bulk of the programs have been removed. You may find stray shortcuts
and folders for them. These can be manually deleted. When/if you reinstall
those program, these items will be recreated.

Currently the programs that were "removed" by System Restore are archived
in a restore point located in the hidden System Volume Information folder.
Create a fresh Restore Point. Then use More Options in Disk Cleanup to
remove all but the most recent of these. Or you could just wait for the
older restore points to expire. Eventually this will happen and the System
Restore cleanup will occur automatically.

I find the items that you've listed as the "breaking points" to be
interesting. I would hope that the AV is not the problem. You could try a
different brand to test. Personally I like EzTrust as it is very
"lightweight" on performance but effective.

Zone Alarm has "pop up" control. I can see where software of this type
might get in the way of a program that uses browser based windows.

Suggestion: Before making *any* change to the system, create a restore
point. Many installation routines do this automatically but not all.
Instead of being caught without a restore point, make sure that you have
one by creating it yourself.

I have tracked it down the AV programme. The flash drive worked well with
everything else and then when I installed the AV last and tested the drive
the laptop crashed. The reason why it doesn't crash on my desktop is that
has an earlier version of the AV and of course my laptop has the latest
version which has apparently caused problems to another user as posted up on
the AV site. He had exactly the same problem as me when he ejected a floppy
drive, the laptop crashed and rebooted itself after he upgraded to the
latest version. The response from Computer Associates was that a fix would
be available soon.

What a painful journey you've had but congratulations on a successful
ending. Your troubleshooting efforts paid off and am glad to hear the AV
company will be releasing a fix.
