I have encountered this problem several times when connecting a small (256MB)
flash drive to my desktop PC (Win XP Pro SP2).
I normally keep System Restore on ONLY for the system C: drive --
C: drive = monitoring
D: E: F: drive = turned off
also
G: DVD ROM
H: DVD RW
I: external 160GB IDE via firewire (set to always come up as the I:
drive)
J: 256MB Flash Drive (set to always come up as the J: drive)
When I connected the J: drive (flash drive) it initially showed up as
suspended; then the C: drive also showed up as suspended, and all restore
points were gone.
A manual restore point had been created about a minute prior to plugging in
the flash drive --in a failed attempt to avert this problem.
QUESTIONS:
1) It there any way to get Win XP to remember the "Turned Off" state for the
flash drive (and the external drive also)?
2) How can I get a download of the hotfix referenced in the the KB 888402
article, which seems to exactly describe this problem; I cannot find any
download link for it?
