Flash Drive Boot

I teach at a high school having many older systems which use Windows 2000.
These systems are constantly in need of reformatting and reloading. Often,
the CD drives don't work. So, I'd like to be able to put Windows 2000 on a
USB flash drive and boot from the USB port. Is this possible and how do I do
it? Thanks!

Doubtful but it entirely depends on whether or not your hardware supports
this since no operating system is involved at this point.

A 'clarification' to my previous Post....I don't need to 'run' the operating
system from the flsh drive. All I want to do is get to the "Setup" for
Windows 2000 on the flash drive, so I can reload Win2000 onto the hard drive.
Can I 'see' the USB flash drive thru the BIOS...how do I get to it??

Same answer. Check the documentation for your hardware.

Are you saying that if your computer hardware supports "boot from USB
device", that is all that is needed? So if you can boot the Windows
setup program from the flash drive, then the rest of the installation
will go through without a problem? (Too bad Microsoft didn't arrange
things such that a Emergency Repair Disk could be stored on the same
flash disk!)

No, you'll also need to make the USB disk bootable. May be there's something
here.

The PE Builder site is very interesting but seems to concentrate on CD
versions. USB-Flash drive are different.

Isn't the "bootable" indicator just a bit in the partition table? If
so, it wouldn't depend on the medium as long as your computer can read
and write blocks like an ordinary disk.

Give this a go. let us know how you make out.

Thanks for the hints, Dave and Stubby...I'll give the ideas a shot on Monday
and see how it goes.

You're welcome.
