Flash Causes Computer to Hang

For months now when I go to a web page that has a flash animation on it
there is a very good chance that my PC will freeze and requires a hard
reboot. It's hard to give a percentage because it's difficult to tell how
many pages I visit have flash animations, but every time I use my PC to
visit some web pages it inevitably happens within minutes. So, my computer
is almost unusable for surfing the web.

Some animations do not cause it to crash, so I can't really see a pattern.
I have Windows 2000 SP4, and am running IE 6.0.2800.1106. I have gone to
macromedia's site and installed the latest plug-in, and I've gone to Windows
update site and downloaded all the updates, but nothing helps.

I don't want to disable flash as I want to be able to visit sites that
incorporate flash. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated!

Hi epigram :-)

You might try the following and see if it helps:

Clearing the TIF Cache -

Safely Delete the Temporary Internet Files
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm

also.......

Remove Flash, including all registry entries for it. Reboot then go to
Macromedia's site. Since it is Flash based you should get the dialog to
install Flash. Use the removal information at their site here:
http://www.macromedia.com/support/flash/ts/documents/playerfaq.htm#remove

also...

Macromedia Flash Player Download Center Windows
http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash
and
Macromedia's Support & Training
http://www.macromedia.com/support/

If these steps do not resolve your problem, please post back to this thread
with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps

Any way to disable the macromedia flash? Maybe some kind of
permission type of thing to load or not? I am tired of movie previews
from cinescape.com

Are you "epigram"? (OP) Otherwise which OS?

FYI in XPsp2 you can use the new Manage Add-ons tool
to temporarily disable the Shockwave Flash Object.

Users of other OS would have to find third-party tools which provide
similar functionality. There are some which are designed explicitly
for toggling Flash support off and on which have been reported to work
with varying success DEPENDING ON THE OS.
