I think it might be a good idea if some indication is given regarding what
platform(s) a given freeware program runs on. Either in the subject line,
or prominently in the body of the message.

For example, I was interested in this "Jikes RVM", a Java virtual machine,
but then it appears to run only the Linux platform, no Windows version. But
I didn't know that for sure from the original post.

If you're interested in a program, then investigate it yourself.
No one has any obligation to inform you of all possible formats where
the program works.

Besides, why would anyone care what an anonymous poster thinks?

It's not always clear with some freeware (especially with open source
projects) just how many platforms it will run on.

Java, Perl or python programs will run on almost any platform assuming you
have the appropriate run time interpreter installed.

Many linux programs will run on Windows using CygWin.

Many Windows programs will run on Linux/BSD using wine.

Somewhat complex at times!

I think you are being a little harsh. Many people post anonyously to
usenet for many different reasons.

Linux only it seems
Jikes RVM runs on Linux®/IA-32, AIX™/PowerPC™, OS X/PowerPC, and
Linux/PowerPC platforms

Thanks Gordon ... I'll have to experiment with CygWin. Usually I guess it's
the other way, but there are Linux programs with no Windows equivalents ...
like the DjVu-format encoder mentioned the other day. Keep em coming!

No, it isn't always clear. That's why you click on the link and find out
for yourself.

Anonymity is sometimes required for circumstances which might bring dire
consequences to one's person or relations. To use it for something so
benign as proposing a change in the way people post news of software
seems, to me, to be ridiculous.
