Fixing folder window that opens automatically

G

Galen

I recently had to reinstall Windows XP when I lost a
motherboard. For some reason, a file folder opens
automatically each time the computer boots. I then have
to close it.

How can I stop this annoying behaviour?

It did it on my first install, but somehow I installed
additional programs and it then stopped.

1. Click Start and select Run.
2. In the Open field, type Regedit and click OK.
3. Navigate to the following folders:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersio
n\Run

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
\Run

4. Verify that all the values in these keys do not
contain any
incorrect, incomplete, or null entries such as "".

If you are uncertain whether an entry is incorrect or
incomplete, you may want to delete all entries other than
the default Windows entry. The only required Windows
default entry is the following entry to run the
System Tray:

Key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersio
n\Run
Value: SystemTray
Value Type: REG_SZ
Value Data: SysTray.exe

5. Delete all other entries except SystemTray.
6. Close the Registry Editor.
7. Restart the system.

The folder should no longer open at startup.

SystemTray isn't required in XP. If it's there it's probably a virus.

Hi Galen,

Go to Start/Run and type in: msinfo32 From there navigate to Software
Environment, Startup Programs. The Command column will show you the exact
command line used or Start/Run/Msconfig/Startup.

You are looking for a listing that uses a long file name/path with spaces in
it, that is not enclosed in quotes. If found that is the culprit. Go to
Start/Run/msconfig/Startup.

If this is the case go to Start/Run/Regedit:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Look here for the program/folder in question. If listed, double click the
entry and put the full path name in quotes.
