fixed with of cells

When I insert a text (copy / paste word document) or a picture into a cell
(or table) the size of the cell changes and as a result all other cells on
the page also change their size. So, I want to adjust the picture or text to
fit into the cell and not that the cell adjusts itself to the with of the
picture text. How do I give the cells a fixed with as to stop them from
changing?
 
Table cells will always expand to fit a non-resizable object such as a
picture. Plan text will wrap. If you copy and paste from a Word document,
paste the text into NotePad first, copy it from there, and paste the NotePad
text (stripped of HTML formatting) into your page.
