My IDE1 slave FIXED HD is unplugging itself!

The results are an inaccesible directories (the disk has
two partitions) and the solution is to reboot!
Is this a virus or hardware problem?
The master disk (20GB) on the same IDE1 buss works just
fine.
I have swapped the IDE cables - same problem.
I have removed both IDE1 drives from the PC. They are now
dangling from the power cables and it seems to eliminate
the problem.
The newer drive (80GB) gets pretty warm.
Do I have a thermo problem when they are both mounted in
the mini tower - directly on top of each other?
