Fix for some sites not reachable

Recently, perhaps after opening an email containing the
malicious and ficticious MS Support/Security update I
could not navigate to certain sites such as google.com. I
could however ping these sites and even navigate to sub
domains such as toolbar.google.com so I was suspicous that
I had been infected by malware. I had also noticed that
upon booting up this morning I had errors loading
inetinfo.dll and some addresses in my address bar had had
a '/0' appended to the address.

I ran the latest anti-virus and anti-malware programs but
did not detect anything.

There are a few posts in this forum describing a similar
scenario.

So here is the fix....

Just run the Internet Explorer Repair utility.
(Start=>Settings=>Control Panel=>Add-Remove Programs,
select 'Microsoft Internet Explorer' from the list and
press the Add/Remove button... select the Repair Option.
Make sure that you reboot for any changes to take effect.

To ensure no re-infection DO NOT EVEN OPEN any email
suggesting a security update OR undeliverable mail. These
mail items that are circulating contain a signature in the
form of "<iframe cid:" and can install even without
openening the attachment.

I have seen this fix several times in recent posts but my
control panel does not include IE in the programs. I'm
running XP. It says Internet Explorer Q9822925. When I
click on it, the only option I have is to remove it and
to return my computer to the previous settings.

Same here; many of us with newer computers came with
Windows XP and IE already installed (and since upgraded);
we have no option available to REPAIR IE6. We can only
remove the Q9822925 update; there is presently ZERO
ability to select "repair" under "add/remove" programs.
This one is a real mess. Presently, can only access
Google through a sub-domain such as cnn.com and searching
from its splash page. Can't search at Yahoo either,
though I can get to the splash page; its search function
just won't execute.

Please help!

Select the "Start=>Run" menu command and copy and paste one of the following
commands

rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE5Maintenance
or
rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance

can only access Google through a sub-domain such as cnn.com

This symptom isn't one you would be likely to fix with an IE Repair.

In addition to Henri Leboeuf's suspicion of malware (in your other thread)
you could try testing if the the problem is caused by your HOSTS file.

E.g. do an nslookup of the google site to see what the address
should be. Then do a ping -n 1 to it (just for its lookup) to see
what address you are really getting. If the addresses are significantly
different you should either edit or rename or delete your HOSTS file.
After changing HOSTS you should also do an
ipconfig /flushdns
to make sure no residual bad addresses are in the dnscache.

A similar possibility is that you could be getting a bad address because
of a hijacker. (I.e., the lookups are working fine; the problem is that
you only think that a lookup for the google site is being done.)
You might be able to find out which site the hijacker
was trying to access by using the netstat -a command
(e.g. if that lookup is working but there is no server active there).

Good luck
