Worked for me but I had to change the Local port Settings first in the
configuration otherwise it would not check my emails at all!

Does this solve the problem with AVG taking 10 times longer to download
e-mails with attachments (like pics)? My problem was not getting AVG to
download mail, even without this config. OE and AVG worked together, but
when it came to big messages with pics, etc, AVG7 took a LOT longer to
download than what the same message took with AVG6 or no AVG..

At present I have removed AVG totally and gone to Avast!, so before I went
ahead and changed all that again it'd be nice to know if the above
particular problem could be solved...

According to Symantec, you do not need "e-mail scanning" enabled for your
system to be protected from virus infected messages. The inbound and
outbound scanning options merely provide a second level of defense. It only
slows down the processing of the e-mails, inbound and outbound. This is for
any AV with w-mail scanning. Most, it not all experts here and other
newsgrouops, will agree with this. In many cases, depending in the AV, it
causes even more problems.
