i use the defragment tool daily- today it took over an
hour to complete (it always takes a couple of minutes),
why?

i use the fix disk tool daily as well- today it seemed as
though it wasn't even performing it's task. i clicked on
OK to begin, and the hd began it's normal preceedure, but
then it suddenly (after 15-20 seconds) slowed to the point
that my hd light wasn't even flashing, and the sound the
hd makes was quiet, why?

note: overall, my machine is very sluggish, even while
online.

Have you installed any new software lately or updated any drivers?

- Greg/Raxco Software
Microsoft MVP - Windows Storage Management/File System

Disclaimer: I work for Raxco Software, the maker of PerfectDisk - a
commercial defrag utility, as a systems engineer in the support department.

i installed sp4 this morning.
Your defrag routine just had a lot more work to do this time 'round is all.
The number of files modified and added after a service pack download can be
truely staggering.

If you still have long defrag times after this, then post again.
one more thing, greg, i stepped away from my box and when i returned, i
noticed that my windows star(something) screensaver wasn't really moving,
if you know what i mean.
When running processor intensive applications in the background, this is
typical.

If it happens when you aren't running anything much in the backgraund, say
so.

"just relax"
Are you protected to the max from intrusion?
AVP (antivirus program) up to date, software firewall in stealth mode,
hardware firewall visa-v router. No extra users; if so they are on separate
user with proper permissions established? If there is a possibility of any
infiltration run "housecall", www.antivirus.housecall.com (run without
subscribing). If "no prolum", probably okay with somebody jacking with-yas.

You can try running from the Command Prompt, " chkdsk /r/f/v " (without the
quotes)( I left a space on purpose)(takes half hour or so)

There is a certain condition in W2K that actually slows the machne, but I'm
not smart enough for that. I'm sure one of these really smart guys (gals)
can let you know the possibility of that happening. (but I don't think it's
that personally).

You can install the "msconfig" console made for "XP" and use it to narrow it
down. Just do a Google.

You also can simply create another user to see if the slowness is contained
in your user account (doesn't have to be the administrator either).(better
if its not)(later you can create a new user and delete the old one to get
rid of built up trash)

Remember there is no computer that is fast enough. I have a twim 3.06 with 2
Gig of DDR3700 Dual channel and it runs like a whale slug sometime. And it's
on a cable modem with a crack for upload max. Be good to your computer, but
better yet understand that its a machine and no matter what you do there is
nothing better than knowledge to give you satisfaction. Preach-Preach-Preach
(shat-dap to me) have fun

Well, you have enough to get started or fixed. Either way, hope it does some
good.
Sometiems we all do not so smart things out of curiosity, especially the
those of us who seem to be OCD about all of this.

good luck,
don
