fit text button

I have just found the "fit text" button in the customize toolbar dialog box.
The description indicates that this will "evenly distribute text between the
margins in a document."

What is the difference between that and the "justify" option on the toolbar?

Also, when adding the "fit text" button to my toolbar so that I could
experiment with it, it seems to be permanently grayed out.

I believe that is one of the many Word features that applies only to Asian
(or Near Eastern) languages. In addition to ordinary justification, however,
there is a DistributePara command (Ctrl+Shift+J) that inserts spaces between
letters as well as between words. The effect is very nice on full lines, but
very bizarre on partially filled last lines, and there seems to be no way*
to
left-align a partial last line (adding a tab doesn't work as it does with
justified lines ending in a line break).

*Actually, if you insert a long string of spaces ending in a nonbreak space,
that *does* work but is very fiddling.

Thanks for the explanation. Very clear and concise.

I doubt that I'll need to use any of the convoluted approaches to aligning
text. I very, very seldom have a task that requires full justification, and
I can always use that option when necessary. Otherwise, I love the right
tab option and the table option for special text alignment needs.

I haven't determined any use for "distributed" text, either, but I just got
to playing around with it in order to answer your question. <g>
