When I use this function...from microsoft...it works for word, but when i put
excel it hangs access. we have both excel 2003 and 2007...is that the
problem? I automated importing a spreadsheet and i need to warn the user if
the spreadsheet is open or not. thanks,

You need to scroll a wee bit further down to the Excel newsgroup.
Presently, you are in the newsgroup for Microsoft Access the database
software.

I don't know this function, "fisprogramrunning". Could you post the code of
it, or else post a link to its source?
