Hi-- Can anyone help? I've just tried to open Movie Maker for the first
time, and every time I try I get the error message that the program "has
encountered a problem and needs to close." So it isn't initializing
correctly. I've gone to Windows Update to download the program again, but it
isn't available as a single download and I can't find it anywhere on the
site. Any suggestions? Thanks.

You fail to mention your OS...if you are
running Vista...disregard the following.

Some users have reported problems
after installing IE7. If this applies to your
situation ...uninstalling IE7 may be worth
a try.

I've also seen a report that disabling the
ffdshow codec could be the fix. To accomplish
this...open Movie Maker and go to...Tools /
Options / Compatibility tab...Uncheck...
ffdshow / OK.

(You can disable ffdshow with this command:
regsvr32.exe /u "C:\Program Files\ffdshow\ffdshow.ax"
After running that command, the regular
DivX/XviD codecs will be used instead of ffdshow.
You can enable ffdshow again with this command:
regsvr32.exe "C:\Program Files\ffdshow\ffdshow.ax" )

I'm using XP. I was able to get into Movie Maker's
Tools/Options/Compatibility, but there is no ffdshow to check.
Also looked at the url you listed, but it's way beyond my technical expertise.
