I have built (for the first time!) the following:

MSI K7N2 Delta-ILSR
XP2600+ Barton (with retail heatsink/fan)
2 x 512MB PC3200
JNC 4JA 8654VL Case

I want to add some case fans to the setup and want to know if I am on
the right track.

Are the case fans reversible to allow intake and exhaust? (as opposed
to buying the specific PCI slot exhaust fans)

I am planning on putting in four YS-TECH FD8125 SILENT 80mm fan - 4
Pin (http://snurl.com/3a30), two in front as intake and 2 in back as
exhaust.

Is this a good setup and are these particular fans any good (anyone
got any experience of them)

Is it worth getting the gel mounts (http://snurl.com/3a34) to cut down
on vibration

TIA

With the fans at 1850rpm i wouldn't worry about getting the gel mounts, but
i do have a friend with the same fans and he has never had any problems with
them in the last year that he,s been using them

FOUR fans? The only problem you are likely to have is keeping the case on
the ground :-)

Is it a bit overkill then...? :-)

I am going down this path as someone on a group somewhere (can't
remember exactly where as I have looked at far too many posts re this)
said that more slower (thus quieter) fans is as good/better than fewer
faster (this louder) fans...

Not electrically, not that it matters.

Good setup, can't say about the brands.

Yes, but the frame and wiring might not be set up to make that convenient.

If you have a power supply fan, you might consider one fan in the back (for
2 front and 2 back total.) If you have more air blowing out than in, the
air pressure in your case is low, meaning dust will be sucked in all the
nooks and crannies around your case.

Including through your removable drives (FD, CD, DVD, etc.). In this
situation, you'll actually end up with dirt and dust constantly being
sucked into places you don't want.

If you have enough fans blowing in with air filters on them, you can
keep the dust in the removable drives to a minimum because any air
flowing through them will be filtered air from inside the case.

OK... Aftfer all these answers, I think I will get 3 fans only and no
gel mounts.

2 in front as intake and 1 in back as exhaust (plus the already
functioning PSU fan)

Air filters? I assume these are mesh/gauze that cover the fans? Can
you provide me with a link...?

In my view, yes it is overkill in my view. Although you have a high end
system you need only one case fan exhausting out of the back of the case to
compliment the PSU fan. The air which these fans displace is drawn in from
the front of the case without the need for extra fans.

if you're going for quiet some type of fan isolator like your gel mounts are
always a good idea. you might want to look at the Panaflo FBA08A12L1A and
Nexus Real Silent case fans as well.

Does that not then (possibly) suck air (plus dust/dirt) through other
orifices, including optical drives?

Yes, there is that possibility, but air will be drawn in from the easiest
place, that is the area between the front of the case and the front panel.
Thus, a flow of air across the motherboard and CPU is assured. Effective
cooling is all about consistent air movement; lots of different fans can
make things worse and work against each other apart from noise and power
consumption (which in itself generates further heat!) issues!

4 fans aint that overkill (i`ve heard of people running 8 case fans on a
mid-tower before)

my lianli PC75 (full tower) came with 4 pre-fitted 80mm fans, and although
case is very cool (atmos-25c, mb-28c, cpu 48c - running 100% cpu for last
40mins) it is audiable - not like a jet engine, but not silent. also, intake
fans are blown past 2x WD Raptor 10krpm raid0 drives.

psu is an enermax 550w with dual fans.

fans are 'reversable' you just flip them around. they should (especially
being branded - YStech) have turn & blow direction printed on the fan's body
side.

end of the day, you can 7v mod your 2x 80mm rear case fans to compensate for
the psu fan(s), will reduce flow (i beleive directly propertional to voltage
drop. eg 12v to 6v = 50% decrese in air flow) and also cut down on noise.

it does but on my set-up I have 2 at the front sucking air in one at the
back blowing out and 2 in the psu. the real task is to balance you air-flow,
you want slightly higher air-flow on the intake fans at the front to avoid
getting lots of dust in other orifices, e.g...optical and floppies. lucky
for me I live in a dusty flat and I don't get to much dust in my orifices

I've seen the setup you propose cause a visible buildup of dust and
lint around the doors of and inside floppy disk and optical drives.

You can buy fan filters for this application. Web searches turn up
all sorts of products (I searched for "80mm computer case fan filter"):

http://www.coolerguys.com/productslist.aspx?categoryid=126
http://www.xoxide.com/lascutfangri.html
http://www.altex.com/product_info.php?cPath=1_62&products_id=3538
http://www.computer-mods.net/fan-filters.htm

The positive air pressure inside the case caused by (filter equipped)
front fans blowing in will actually blow most of the air out of the
top back vents, but will also allow a small amount of filtered air to
seep out of the optical drives, helping to keep them clean.

Here is one:
http://www.xoxide.com/fanaccessories.html

They've got filters and fan controllers. A good fan controller will
let you adjust fan speed and often monitor temperatures to balance
noise with airflow/cooling. These let you control noise, but would
also let you add more case fans and allow you to run them slower and
quieter.

Lots of other vendors carry these sorts of products. They're not
uncommon.

It's not so simple. The *most* air will be drawn from the easiest place.
This isn't electricity we're talking about. Air will be drawn in *all*
spaces - more from bigger spaces with less resistance, and vice versa.
Thus, a flow of air across the motherboard and CPU is assured. Effective
cooling is all about consistent air movement; lots of different fans can
make things worse and work against each other apart from noise and power

That's all true. The dust issue is another matter though. Personally, I'd
consider it.

We can leave personal issues aside, can't we?
