Hi everyone, this is my first post and my first question to the group.
My home computer has an odd problem. It seems to be acting
strangely. Whenever I'm running more than one prog at teh same
ime it seems to shut down. I thought it to be the processor, and
applied thermal grease, to no avail. When I have the side on, and
run it doing normal work, it locks, or reboots.
I currently have the side off and a small fan pointed inside and
haven't had a problem yet. I tried testing the memory, one stick at
a time with the same problem. I downloaded Sondra tools, but
that is a bit confusing.
I'm not really sure what tools to use. I am hoping it's a simple
solution such as adding another fan to it, but I fear that it might
be worse. If you can help in any way I would appreciate it.
Either by recomending things to try, troubleshooting tools, or
anything else.
Thanks in advance.
Scott
1) Please change your Outlook Express settings. Under Outlook
Express toolbar, these settings are found under:
"Tools"->Options->Send, the section labeled "News Sending Format"
should have "Plain Text" selected. On the "Plain Text Settings"
button to the right of that, choose to automatically indent the text
and use the line wrap at <+ 60 characters.
This will make your posts FAR more readable and appease those who are
particular about such things. Also it's appropriate for this
newsgroup because we don't use HTML or attachments (which is how your
HTML version of the message appears to some people).
2) Since the computer problem disappears (or at least lessens) with
the case cover off and a fan, it would seem to be overheating. You
need determine which component is overheating... check the BIOS and
windows temp monitors to see what they report. If you don't know
what temp ranges your system should be operating in, then post those
temps and a description of the system, like CPU, motherboard, and
video card make/model details, and descriptions of the heatsinks on
each. Also a description of the case make, model, and fans already
installed might help, as well as a link to an online photo(s) of the
case for those of us who may not be familiar with the particular case.
It's probably either the CPU, northbridge, or video card overheating.
Check all fans to be sure they're running too, including the one in
the power supply.
