Firmware on my Drive

My problem is that when I burn a CD my system slows down
and it burns in half it's speed. My software is Roxio
(EasyCDcreator 5.0) and I have contacted the techs which
they told me to first check if my Firmware on my drive is
up to date. How do you check if your firmware is up to
date? I'm not farmiliar with the term "firmware".
 
Firmware is some software that actually "lives" inside your CD-RW drive and
handles basic functionality. You should contact the manufacturer of your CD
burner to see if such an update is available.
