Hi yall
Got a question for some knoledgeable person.
Can you hot plug firewire cables like usb?
Or is that a no no?
I have a external hard drive encloser with eide hard drive.
I can connect it USB or Firewire. Also use firewire for DV camera.
Thanks all

I have plugged in a fire wire cable to a camera and un plugged it with
the system running. I have not seen any problems on my system.

Both USB and Firewire are hot plug, but some devices might
recommend some procedure, such as the "safely remove
hardware" that XP provides.

Hi Guys
Thanks a lot for the info, that is what i thought. I had just built a new PC
from scratch, Asus motherboard.
Everything worked great till i pluged in my external hard drive to
firewire. It just shut the PC right down, and no more firewire after that.
I called Asus and the said must have been a bad board, got a case# and got
exchange from retailer.
I was a little afraid to try it again till i talked to you guys, but i
worked up the courage and hot pluged it and no problem.
Thanks again.

Don't be surprised if you blow another motherboard when you hot plug
your firewire drive next week or next month.

The problem is that many motherboards have inadequate ESD protection for
their USB and Firewire ports. I recommend ensuring the device and PC are
at the same electrical potential before hot plugging. This can be
achieved by touching the exposed metal part of the USB or Firewire
connector to a screw on the PC case immediately before inserting the
connector into the port on the PC.

Yes, you can hot-plug, but make sure you use the "Safely remove Hardware" icon
to ensure the cache is flushed before you disconnect a HD.
