firewire problem

I can't get my computer to recognize my JVC GR-D94U Mini DV cam with
firewire. I have XP sp2 installed. My computer is a p4 2.4 ghz Aopen
ax4sg-n with a generic 4 port VIA based PCI firewire card. I have tried 3
cables and my neighbours computer as well (His Sony works fine on his, but it
won't recognize mine). He tried my cables on his cam-corder and they
connected to his computer no problem, so they are fine. I put it in Play
with the power connected as instructed. Tried unplugging the firewire and
plugging it back in. Rebooted with it on and connected.

Bottom line: Both computers don't show anything connected to the firewire
port in device manager when the camera is plugged in. No conflicts. No
driver errors. My camera won't work on his or my computer. The cables all
are tested and work. His camera works on his machine (I didn't try it on
mine). I have tried moving the firewire card to another slot, to no avail.

The only time it will connect is with USB, which is poor for video.

JVC won't acknowledge any fault on their part, but I feel that is where the
problem lies, unless it is a Microsoft defect.

I am pulling out my hair on this and have wasted the whole weekend on it.

Help!!!!

OK, I'll try that and let you knowif it works. Today I went to a computer
shop and tried my camera in 3 brand new computers, they acted as if nothing
was in their firewire ports as well. I even tried a video duplication
company called Copy Cat Video where they take people's home movies and
transfer them to DVD and their computer didn't recognize it either.

Has JVC or Microsoft acknowledged the problem? Why haven't they come up
with a proper fix or updated drivers to solve the problem properly?
Consumer's shouldn't have this problem when they buy a product of any type.
It is a blatant disregard for customer service.

This may sound like a silly question, but are you using the camera
on-battery or on the AC adapter. My JVC DVM5 does not show up in sp2 when
running on battery (it did in sp1), but is detected and works fine when it
running on its AC adapter.

I have tried it both ways, no difference. I did the rolling back of the
drivers as suggested to SP1 changed to:

1394bus.sys is 5.1.2600.1106
arp1394.sys is 5.1.2600.1106
nic1394.sys is 5.1.2600.1106
ohci1394.sys is 5.1.2600.1106
enum1394.sys is 5.1.2600.0

When that didn't work I checked out

http://tinyurl.com/c2p89

followed directions to change MSDV.sys

(now version 5.1.2600.0)

double checked that no other newer drivers were reinstalled and changed
sp2.cab to sp2.ca_.

IT STILL DOESN'T WORK.

What am I doing wrong?

OK, I just sent you my information. I hope you can help me find a solution.
My last option, I guess is to send the camera in for repairs as it is still
under warranty..

Mark, I have had to contact JVC's "customer service" (I use the term
loosely) several times for the GR-D290U I recently bought. My computer
also wouldn't recognize the camcorder & there's nothing helpful in the
instruction manual. They said it has to be set to Play (which you said
you did) and Memory. I had mine set on Play and Video. Don't know if
this applies to your situation but hope it helps a little, which is
more than JVC does!

Here is a transcript of my latest conversations with Graham Hughes for those
interested:

"I just tried his Sony Digital 8 on my computer’s firewire and it connected
like it was supposed to. (mine won’t)

He does have sp2 installed. I will let you know what else I find.
Mark

Graham: Mark,

Thanks for the info.

It is important to find out for sure that your friend’s pc is either running
sp1 or 2. If his is running SP1 and it doesn’t work, it does point away from
SP2 causing the trouble, but not definitely, as different pc’s etc etc…….

I will await your testing cam and asking him about sp2.
Cheers

Graham

Mark: I will answer your questions in the order asked.

How old is the cam? - Under 1 year

Is it PAL /NTSC? - NSTC

Has the cam ever worked on your pc or any other pc? - Not that I am aware
of, but it does work with USB

When was the last time? -

Can you remember if anything odd happened when it was last connected? -
Nothing

Do you use mains power when connecting? - Tried Both

Is your friend’s pc sp2 as well? - Unsure, but likely. New PC’s in the
store I tried unknown as well.

Can you try his cam on your pc, just for confirmation the pc is fine? I
will try and let you know

Can you find a friend with an SP1 pc to try your cam on? This should rule
out the firewire port being damaged on the cam, which does happen quite often
unfortunately. -- I will try to find one and let you know

Can you try the fixes listed on my site, or the ones you fell happy doing
and let me know if anything improves? I tried all the fixes and replaced the
sp2 drivers with sp1 ones and then changed the name of sp2.cab to sp2.ca_.
newer drivers were not reinstalled. The names and dates of the files are
below. There are no other locations with these files dated differently on my
computer.
