I have a canon zr70 digital camcorder with dv output, got a firewire, plugged it into the camera and into the ati main hub into the firewire port, when I go to the tv (to record from the firewire) on the inputs I dont see my camera (even when its in playback mode and is playing the video on the camera itself).

I tried all 3 input sources that the tv offers, analog, composite and s video, but I see no option of firewire and none of those inputs seem to show the firewire input thru them (cycled thru all while camcorder was playing and also tried on the hub plugin and the card directly plugged in).

Probably something very simple I am not doing, I asked my dad for the books but he hasnt found them yet...so for now I am just doing trial and error till I find a solution or get some help here.

I am using the newest drivers from ati's site as well as the 8.7 MMCenter, what else am I doing wrong here guys (or gals) that I cannot see my camera thru the ati card to record into my pc,,, you do it thru TV right? which input once youve plugged the camera in thru firewire are you seeing your image thru on the tv (composite, s video or analog?) those are my only three choices, shouldnt there be a firewire choice too?

Just looking for a bit of help on this as I am still stumped...

isn't this ati video card and the multimedia software supposed to
capture thru the firewire too? I thought thru the tv portion (where
you select an input) you could select firewire somehow (or have it
automatically kick in if detected in the default over s video or
something)...

No. The firewire port is a "convenience" port, nothing more--it's not
tied into MMC.

And the firewire port on the 8500DV is necessarily connected via the
motherboard's AGP-PCI bridge chip--that's the only way you can put
firewire on an AGP board--this causes problems for quite a lot of
applications that support PCI-based firewire.

It was a good idea that didn't work as well in the real world as it did
in the lab, if you'll check the ATI product line you'll find that they
haven't tried to incorporate that particular feature into any of their
newer boards.

If you have an 8500DV and need to input via firewire, give it a shot,
but don't count on it working.

Ulead Media Studio Pro 7 video capture program works fine in transferring the
dv video and so does AVI_IO.

Acquiring video via firewire is not video capture, it's a data transfer. The
tv program doesn't do firewire.

Thanks for clearing that stuff up for me guys :)

I do have a firewire port on my pc but no software to bring it in with, I
just thought my 8500DV with the firewire would allow me to import thru
firewire thru the MMC (sorta like we do with analog or s video signals) yet
without the books here (my dad has them) I couldn't figure out how to make
it all work.

Thanks though for setting me straight here, I will start to look into using
my pcs firewire port (vs the ati cards) and look for a decent software
program to use with it, possibly Uleads MediaStudio Pro 7 (any comments on
software good or bad that I should know?)

Canon Z70MC DV camera, 2.1 ghz AMD with gigabyte GA 7VXP Ultra motherboard,
1.5 gig 2700 crucial ram, 120 gig 7200 rpm drive dedicated in NTFS for
storage on w2k pro machine, so I should meet the specs to run many of these
programs,,,just looking for advice on which are easier to use or have less
bugs..
