In my experince, they're a dime-a-dozen. I'd recommend one with a Molex
connection for extra juice for peripherals. Older SB Audigy soundcards used
to come with a FireWire connection -- an added marketing benefit/gimmick
that currently works for me (no Molex though).

Of course, there a two flavors of FireWire these days, so make sure the one
you choose suits your needs, especially for DV work. Most consumers just
need the first generation, 1394a.

buy it try it, just put it into a slot and if your using xp it should have
the drivers.
not necessary to run extra power to it. The pci slot has enough.

I used an $8 firewire card based on the NEC chipset and it worked perfectly
for me. You can spend more, but you probably don't have to. Know that card
based on the TI (Texas Instrument) chipset have had compatibility issues
with some motherboards, so do a little homework first. Find out whose chip
is on your $10 card and see if Google brings up any issues with it.
