Firewire output from A7N8X dlx to Sony camera dv-in

I have the following;

Asus A7N8X Deluxe mobo
Windows 2000 pro (sp4)
Nvidia Unified Driver v2.45 (international version)

Sony TRV240 digital camcorder (which does have DV-in facility)

Output via the on-board firewire ports to the camera does not work. This
problem has been very widely reported on these and other newsgroups but the
solution has not. We see only a grey screen and some squares as described by
many others. I'm wondering if anyone out there has got it working.

There is a "filter" on Asus german ftp site
ftp://ftp.asuscom.de/pub/ASUSCOM/TREIBER/CHIPSATZ/NVIDIA/1394_filter.zip
which seems to have solved the problem for some but it works only with
Windows XP. I have actually tried it just in case, but the driver included
with it is not recognised by Windows 2000.

According to previous threads several people reported this problem to Asus
and were awaiting their reply. Any joy anyone?

Does anyone have the solution? Or must I go out and buy a Firewire card?

I can't give advice or opinion regarding your specific setup, but I run
Asus A7V266-E without problems.

Have a look at my walk-through in case it might help at:

The problem which is widely reported is with the specific motherboard.

I should really have said in my original post that we did have this working
very well with the same camera on a previous computer. So we know what we
are doing where the camera and software are concerned. (In fact Tony I think
you helped us out with that about a year ago!). The only new factor in the
equation is the Mobo.

If you Google for A7N8X and Firewire you will find that lots of people have
had exactly the same problem. Most have I believe resorted to installing
firewire cards.

I just wondered before I go out to buy a card whether Asus have come up with
a solution which works with Windows 2000.

If not maybe some of you would like to recommend a firewire card. As
inexpensive as possible and tried and tested with Sony cameras?

I have the A7N8X deluxe ver 2 with bios 1003 and the drivers that came on
the CD. And with Win XP Pro and using Vegas Video 4 I have no trouble
sending firewire DV video out to my Sony DVMC-DA2 DV media converter. I do
not have a DV camcorder.

This newsgroup has plenty of examples of people with the same problem as
myself. However those using Windows XP seem either not to have difficulety
at all or to be able to apply the fix I posted a link to earlier. This does
tend to imply that the problem is driver related rather than hardware.
However I haven't found anyone who has solved it for Win2000 yet.

As a result I have just bought and installed a Firewire card a DRF-A3 from
www.scan.co.uk was only about £11 including a cable (plus p&p of course).
This installed very easily and worked sending video both from and to my
camera straight out of the box. Eureka!

Thanks to everyone for suggestions.

I gave up in the end. Although there is a solution which seems to work for
XP no-one seems to have solved it for Windows2000 users.

So I have bought a D-Link DRF-A3 firewire card only £11 including a cable
from www.scan.co.uk. Fantastic! It installs easily, and works straight out
of the box. No difficulties at all and I can now send video from camera to
PC and also from PC to camera!
