Firewire or USB2 DVD drive enclosure ??

Iam just looking to put my DVD burner on the outside of my case. And
have it portable as well.


My Audigy 2 Zs has a firewire port and was thinking i could use that.
Which would be btter Firewire or USB 2 enclosure. And any brands and
or reviews or recomendations would be great.

I know firewirea int that popular, so i think USB 2 would be the best
bet. But if Firewire is faster and better i might do that and use the
port on the card. Might as well.

Your summary is correct: USB2 is popular, FireWire is faster
and generally better. An other one of these historic mistakes.

Generally USB2 is better supported, and firewire is a bit faster.

Some external exclosures support both,
tho not all that many with a burner.

You'll find that USB2 is better supported by burning software.

Assuming you have no operability problems in either case, makes no
difference. Your DVD writer is incapable of saturating either USB2 or
Firewire.

I will put my 2c into this ... I have had problems with DVD+R 8x on Firewire
and USB-2. This would be with a MSI K7D Master (dual AMD 2100 MP) and a 64
bit firewire card (1394A part, not the B)
Both Nero 6 and 7 (i just upgraded that system today) show the hardware
buffer dropping from 97-98 down to ~33 and back up too often for comfort.
The previous DVD Burner I had was Pioneer 108 and it was rock solid at UDMA5
(not on firewire). The new one is one of those BENQ $50 lightscribe dual
layer. It also worked good at UDMA5, but when I moved it to an external
case, I noticed a problem with that real time buffer indicator that Nero
has. I set it down to 4x speed and watched it burn a 2nd dvd. It hit ~%20
once that I was watching. Much better than 8x but still not up to UDMA5
rate it was solid at %95-%99

That being said, a verify showed no problem and both DVDs worked fine. I
assume the link protection or whatever it is called prevented a buffer under
run.

FWIW, on that Pioneer 108, it would consistently ruin old 2x DVD-R media
within seconds of starting nero. A firmware upgrade did not solve the
problem. Seems the laser was too intense for the media.
