Firewire Install Kills Internet

When I install my video cam via the integrated firewire
port on my laptop, I lose all internet connectivity. The
modem connects to the ISP OK, however all I get
are "Server not found" or "DNS error" messages from any
program trying to access the internet.

The same thing happens when I try to install a firewire
PCMCIA card - the internet doesn't work anymore.

I have disabled the network bridge, but that does not
help. To restore the internet, I have to restore the
system prior to firewire device installation.

Please help!

sounds like dns issue. compare the results of ping yahoo.com and nslookup
command before and after firewall enabled.

thanks, Robert L.

yes, that's exactly right. it's not possible to ping
(request timed out) or nslookup (can't find server name
for...), or use ANY internet-related application when a
1394 device is installed.

with a firewire (IEEE 1394) device installed, it seems
like the data stream from the modem is blocked or cut off
somehow. the modem is ok; the physical connection to the
isp is there. it's just that no applications on the
computer can access the internet.

in troubleshooting, i have disabled (from device manager)
the network bridge and lan. i have also disabled the
icf. nothing helps.

the only thing i have been able to find is the "wan
miniport (ip)" fails diagnostics if a firewire device is
installed.

as an aside, it bothers me that xp sees any 1394 device as
a "network component". i suspect this is somehow related
to the problems.

what can i do next? i would dearly love to get the
firewire devices working properly.
