Ok, here's the situation:

I have a firewire hard drive connected to my Dell Inspiron 8200. I had lots
of trouble with the firewire port on the machine, so I bought a pc card
firewire adapter to use. I thought that would fix my problem, no dice.

I have a 160 gb Maxtor drive in a Compucable case.

Essentially, the hard drive 'times out' and loses its connection to my
computer. I have completely played around with the power settings, but it
still happens. The specific error that pops up when I lose the drive
connection is:

Windows - Delayed Write Failed
Windows was unable to save all the data for the file E:\$Mft. The data has
been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware
or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere.

I think the problem is part of Windows XP. Microsoft says that there are
hotfixes available for KB articles: 811048, 811077, 329909 and a few
others. The problem is that you need to contact Microsoft tech support to
get them. Since this machine is Dell they will not allow me to contact them
and insist that I contact the OEM.

Can anyone please provide me with the aforementioned hot fixes (or anything
to do with IEEE 1394)?

Of course, I would prefer if someone could tell me to tap my magic wand on
the computer and it would work...Any advice is welcome.

Regards,
LS

I wish I had a magic wand for my network problems. I have a 200 GB
hard drive in an outboard case I got from Overstock.com. I can connect
with Firewire or USB 2.0. I use the 1394 port on my Sony VAIO. It
works fine and does not time out. Search for all of the properties
associated with this External Disk and you may find that there is a
default timeout like a hard drive for laptops. WinXP/Home SP-1a works
fine for me.

What setting do you use for the "quick removal" option?

Also, do you think the formatting/partitioning of a drive has anything to
do with it? I have mine divided into a few partitions, with both ntfs and
fat32 represented.

Should I use partitionmagic (if I can ever connect to the drive) to fix
that up?

10 days ago I swiched from W2K to XP.
After that I had a lot of troubles with my 5 firewire HDD. Like: Disk
get lost, RPC errors, CHKDSK failes. Backup crashed etc. Dozens of
restarts and an overflowing eventlog (System) with many crosses. BTW
some ot the probleme I had before also with W2K.

Then I got the tip that Norton Anivirus 2003 could be the cause of all
this troubles.
I threw Norton out and see - touch wood - the troubles were gone.
I have not a single enty in the eventlog (system) since.
It looks like Norton is not compatible with XP and/or Firewire.
Could it be that it conflicts with RPC?
I replaced it with the German GData Antivirenkit 12
WWW.GData.de

I would like to get reactions.
