my laptop comes with a built in firewire port but the problem is, it is
smaller than the firewire ports ive seen on other computers. the ones i see
have a wide pentagonal shape but the one on my laptop is a very slim almost
rectangle one. whats the differece between the two? are they both the same
firewire or are they different versions? (like usb1.1 abd usb 2.0)

Your mini-firewire port is probably only 4 wires, not the
full 6 pin firewire that also supplies power to run external
devices.

There are two types of firewire port... 4 pin and 6pin. Most notebooks and
camcoreders have 4 pin. Most desktops have 6 pin. There are also different
types of cable...

6 pin to 6 pin
6 pin to 4 pin
4 pin to 4 pin

Yes, you can buy a 6 to 4 pin adaptor. Note that 4 pin connectors are
missing the device power pins so any device you connect to a 4 pin firewire
port will require an external power supply.
