I have two external firewire hardrives that were part of my XP system. My new
Vista environment wants to re-format the drives. Additionally I cannot see
any of the files that are on the external drives.

Make/Model refs for these drives? You may need to get Vista drivers for them
from manufacturer.

Have you mounted the drives in Computer Management and assigned them Logical
Drive names? If not, the drives will not appear in Windows Explorer/My
computer. If the drives do appear but you can't see the files, check in
computer management to see if the drive is populated with data. If it shows
no data on the drive, you might have accidentally formatted the drives during
a wizard. Plug them into an XP machine and check to see if the same thing has
happened.

I am working on a Western Digital 1394 hard drive.
I ran testdisc last night and could see all the files on the drive.
Testdisc also reported that the boot log was bad, but it could not fix the
issue. However, I did manage to copy a few files off the external drive using
testdisc.
I have not mounted the drive in computer management. The drive simply
comes up as drive "G" with no name attached to it. Testdisc did see the name
"Drive One" assigned to the drive in the XP environment.
I will check with Western Digital for drive updates. The drive is
ancient, but dependable.
Thanks for the responses.

All drivers are up to date and Computer Management will not mount the
disc. It describes the drive as raw, not NTSF.
Looks like it's time to copy some files and re-format.
