Firewire device not recognized

I'm running Windows XP Professional SP2 with all critical updates applied.

When the most recent version of Defender is installed, my machine does not
recognize my Sony DCR-TRV840 camcorder when I plug in the firewire cable.

If I uninstall Defender then my machine does recognize the device.

By "machine does not recognize" I mean that neither Autoplay nor Pinnacle
Studio 8.12.x can detect the device.

This is a reproducible condition. If I installed Defender from Microsoft's
website then my machine no longer recognizes the device.

I am restarting my machine whenever I install or uninstall Defender.

Does Win XP recognize your Firewire interface (with no camera attached)?
Get that to happen then plug in the camcorder. (Leave WD alone and see
what it does. I use firewire and WD and have had no issues.)

FWIW, I use firewire on a machine with Windows Defender installed and see no
problems either. Still--I can imagine this might be a software
compatibility problem of some sort.

I take it that you get no errors from the various apps involved? Is there
proprietary Sony software involved? Can it see the camera? What happens if
you remove it?
