I just got a Sony TRV950 miniDV camcorder to replace my old Hi-8 Canon
E1000. I can capture from S video OK via the nVidia Universal Capture
Card using WMM or PowerProducer but cannot capture via the 4 pin
IEEE1394 cable. Of course Device manager says that the 1394 driver is
working OK but it ain't. Incidently S-video still appears at the
connector even after selecting A/V-->DV OUT ON in the TRV950 menu.
I invested in the TRV950 partly to use it as a transfer device from VHS
and Hi-8 tapes since I had problems with PowerProducer and
PowerDirector recognizing the nVidia capture card.

When you connect the camcorder to an A/C power source, connect it via
firewire to the PC, and turn the camcorder to the VCR mode, is nothing
recognized by the PC at all?

Is the IEEE1394 port on the PC known to be working with other devices?

Windows should produce a dialog asking you what action to take when
a device is attached via firewire - So with DV cam attached and set to
VCR or camera, it is not detected? An on-screen dialog dosen't appear?
Double-click "My Computer", it should be listed under "Scanners and Cameras"
as "Sony DV camcorder Digital Camera"...... Is it there?
If not: It is either a problem with the Camcorder, or the connection or you
are not setting it up correctly.
In case there might be an unusual "ground"
Disconnect all cable and interconnects from the Sony.
Remove the anolog connections from PC, S-video etc
And reconnect using the firewire cable only, then try again.

Well group, the TRV950 and Firewire is working today, XP spots the
Firewire connected camera as soon as it is powered up and suggests my
various video editing programs to open. Didn't do anything different
today, perhaps the Firewire 4 pin plug was not contacting the PC front
panel socket???????????????
The only odd thing is the WMM doesn't seem to capture the audio like
the Cyberlink and AVS Media programs do. I don't much care since I
don't use WMM anyway.
Thanks for your responses.
