I got a new external LG DVD writer with firewire and usb ports. I use a
6-pin cable to connect to firewire port of my desktop pc. It does not work
until I change to another 6-pin cable or a 6-pin to 4-pin (small connector)
cable. I am at loss why the full 6-pin cable is not working with the
writer. Your guidance is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Ray

I can't comment on LG specifically but I have found that the Firewire and
USB cables supplied with many devices are substandard when compared to the
ones sold by Belkin. Its just a case of manufacturers penny pinching
although you would have thought that any money saved it this way would be
lost on returns.

Bob,

Is there any other design on firewire cable? I use the 6-pin firewire cable
on my iPod docking and works correctly and failed to use the iPod firewire
cable on DVD writer as well. That leads me to have this query.

M,

I had the same thought originally. However, I tried the supplied cable on
my iPod docking and it works correctly and failed to use the cable for iPod
docking on the DVD writer. It leads me to have such query. It seems to
have more than one kind of firewire connection.

What I'm saying is some cables don't meet spec. The connector may not
have exactly the correct pin dimensions and if plugged into one brand of
adapter it works but in another one the contacts don't quite meet up and
so it doesn't work. You will have to determine what the problem is by
inspection.

Bob,

Eventually, I found out the differences: straight-through and crossover
cables. Do you have any idea which one is more common on the market. It
seems they are not as common as CAT5 cables.

Thanks,

Ray
