It seems that Microsoft has release an update for many of the Firewire problems
that folks have had with XP. After having spent the last yewar trying to get my
problems with Firewire devices worked and told that there wasn't a problem,
Microsoft released an update on Oct. 6.

I haven't been able to keep my Compact Flash Card Reader recognized and backup
disk drives and CD-RW/DVD-RW recognized, this update seems to have fixed the
problem. I've had it on my system for the last 4 days and now the card reader
is always recognized without having to go to Device Manager and disabling and
re-enabling the 1394 driver until the reader was recognized. Since I move the
CD and disk to USB, I haven't tested them yet.

really I stuck a firewire card in over a year ago and I have had no
problems.
Xp found the card and installed the drivers and my dv cam works fine.

Thanks for the reply. Having used the usenet since 1988, I don;t take
things personally.

I reallize that many had no problems. I had no problems with my setup
withg Win2K or WinXP up through SP1. It was with SP2 the problems started.
The Firewire on the MB was recognized, but item plugged into it would be
recognized sometimes sometimes not. They would just dropoff sometimes. I
could disable the firewir in Device Manager and re-enable it and the
devices would appear. Sometimes they would just dropoff after few
seconds, other times they would stay and work fine, until I added another
device.

A friends computer worked fine and we could never figure out the
difference other than the MB. I updated the BIOS on the MB, the Firewire
was built into the MB. MS wasn't any help. They had me try a few different
things with no success. Their only conclusion was that it was the
hardware. Funny how the new patch works.

I've had a computer in the house since 1980, my old Apple ][. I work as a
System/Data Analyst and have built many systems and networks. This problem
drove me nuts because it always seemed to fail when I needed it most. IT
was so good to finish a photo assignment last weekend and get home and
have no problems down loading 12GB of photos from my portable firewire
storage device and memory cards.
