FIREWALLS

Hi,

Yes, they will conflict. While both will protect, they may inhibit some
downloads that you actually do want. Use one or the other, but not both at
the same time.

CAN ZONE ALARM BE USED AS WELL AS THE XP FIREWALL? WILL 2 FOREWALLS CAUSE
ANY PROBLEMS?

For the majority of people, yes.

Hi,

99% of people will never need to do any firewall configuration. Nor will
they know how to use a firewall to detect and block an outgoing trojan.
Having a firewall with those capabilities is nice, but it's like owner a
freezer in Antarctica - sort of useless. The XP firewall effectively blocks
unwanted incoming traffic, and the updated version in the
soon-to-be-released SP2 will give some basic configurability to those who
actually need it.

Hi Rick. I presently use the XP Home firewall as well as Sygate. Have not
noticed any problems but then again I'm not a big downloader. I'm wondering
how Microsoft will address the issue in SP2.

XP firewall only blocks 'incoming' traffic it doesn't block outgoing traffic
so if a virus was on your pc and started sending information from your pc to
the internet it would not get blocked by the xp firewall.
Microsoft do not recommend using two firewalls. However, i am currently
using sygate firewall and the ms firewall of service pack 2 and both are
working fine.

Hi Rick;
I guess what I was looking for was a bit more on incoming and outgoing
protection...I should have elaborated.(G)
You mention outgoing trojan, but I think "outgoing" calls are important
, what with so many software makers including "phone home" coding in
their products which is not always front and centre on their product
blurb, I like a lttle more control over who and what is coming and going
from my computer.(G)
As you mention SP2 will have additional features , I assume outgoing
calls protection will be included in the basic configurability you
mention.
Another point I'm interested in is "small home networking" I believe the
current built in WinXP firewall will cause problems if you are using a
router and have the WinXP firewall activated....haven't tried it myself
yet but it does seem to be a problem from what I have read.
I'm a new user of WinXP having just purchased a new system with WinXP
installed and trying to get used to it compared to my old system with
Win98SE , and yes I do have both system hooked up with an old D-Link
router.
I have an old version of Tiny Personal firewall on the Win98SE system
and a newer version on the WinXP system everything works ok, but the
newer version of Tiny Personal firewall is far more complicated and is
driving me nuts with my Eudora list mail that include ads I don't mean
ads that Eudora has with their free version just ads include in some e-
mails.
So my question to you was because I'm looking for a better firewall or
should I say easier one to set up and use, one that can block incoming
and outgoing calls.
Thanks for taking the time to reply...much appreciated.

Your comments are interesting, I was under the impression that you should
and couldn't use two different firewalls?
Is that because one is the new SP2 version?

GJP

Hi,

The updated version in SP2 still does not block outging traffic, but it does
resolve the issues associated with home networking (easily allows file/print
sharing, as well as apps). It's adequate for most, but it sounds to me like
you still want configurability mixed with the ability to monitor outgoing
traffic, so I would recommend you stick with Tiny or another third party
application. Me, I like and use the E-Trust firewall on my laptops.

I have Norton Internet Security and the firewall with it has not cased any
difficulty. Before downloading SP-2 I checked Symantec and they state that
the dual firewalls will not create any problem when asked if the SP-2 and
NIS2004 will cnflict with one another.
