Do firewalls have to be upgraded like anti-virus software? If so, do I have
to uninstall the old firewall before installing the new version?
 
No. Firewalls block unsolicited access to your computer, allowing on those
sites that you approve to enter. If a previously trusted site is no longer
trusted or wanted you simply block it.

Yes they do. At least my firewall, ZoneAlarm needs to be updated once in a
while.
When you download your free copy of ZoneAlarm (from www.zonelabs.com) you´ll
be prompted every now and then that updates are available. You can install
them online. No de- or reinstallation is required. I use it for 4 your now
and it proves satisfactory. Never had to upgrade to a complete new version.
