My son has advised me to add a hardware type of firewall/router since I
started using a cable connection. What is a good brand and do they really
work? I tried the software that came with McAfee and found that it was a
pain to use.
Thanks

There are many good ones, and yes, they work! I can recommend the Linksys
BEFSX41. It also allows secure ICS, and works right out of the box (and I
don't work for them or have any affiliation with them).

ZoneAlarm is an excellent free software firewall that gives you good control over inbound and outbound traffic.
