Why would disabling the Windows XP firewall cause an inability to connect to
the internet? I asked a friend who just got a new computer to disable his
and he had the same results.

A better question, why would you want to disable the firewall? With all the
viruses and trojans out there, it's a scary place......

I was afraid my question would be misinterpreted. I should have gone
further. I was disabling it first to activate the Norton firewall which
came with a free 90 day trial. I had used Zone Alarm on my previous
computer but wanted to see what Norton had to offer.

You never disable one prior to enabling another. It only takes a few
milliseconds to become infected if you are using a broadband connection.

In your case, I can't guess about your friend unless he has the same
situation. The Norton firewall is not configured for the internet. I am not
a Norton user, so I can't tell you how to use it, but the Norton help
section should be able to.
