I am trying to find the properties for win xp pro firewall. Is it always
running and is it any good.

Greetings --

WinXP's built-in firewall is _adequate_ at stopping incoming
attacks, and hiding your ports from probes. It doesn't give you any
alarms to tell you that it is working, though. What WinXP also does
not do, is protect you from any Trojans or spyware that you might
download and install inadvertently. It doesn't monitor out-going
traffic at all, much less block (or at even ask you about) the bad or
the questionable out-going packets. It assumes that any application
you have on your hard drive is there because you want it there, and
therefore has your "permission" to access the Internet.

ZoneAlarm, Kerio, or Sygate are all much better than WinXP's
built-in firewall, and are much more easily configured, and there are
free versions of each readily available. Even Symantec's Norton
Personal Firewall is superior by far, although it does take a heavier
toll of system performance then do ZoneAlarm or Sygate.

WinXP's built-in firewall won't be running unless you've
deliberately enabled it.

To enable/disable the built-in firewall, Start > Network
Connections > Right-click the connection > Properties > Advanced >
Protect my computer.....

The firewall has to be activated by you so be sure you go into your network connections and activate it. As for the other doom and gloom MVP's that warn about outgoing packets being sent by spyware on your machine give me a break. There are excellent free products to check your sysytem for spyware\adware. My personal favourite is SpyBot Search and Destroy. I also use Hijack This. BhODemon. SpywareBlaster. IDBlaster. All of which have kept me free of any need for more than the excellent XP firewall. These combined with a top of the line Anti-virus program eleminate the need for more than the native firewall. In 2-1\2+yrs of having XP I have never had the need for outgoing warnings. I personally think that if you do need it then you should do better maintenance on your OS. Good luck.
