Please excuse a naive question. I heard that XP has
a built-in firewall. So I ask, is that true? Is it automatic?
Does it have levels of security? How can I check mine?
Thank you

Open XP's "Help and Support" and type: FIREWALL , and hit enter.
Click on the task titled: "Enable or disable Internet Connection Firewall".

Bill,

It's not a naive question, it's a stupid question. Did you
consider looking in Help and Support? See, I told you it
was stupid.

No one learns anything by not asking questions. This is a basic group (see
the title), so a basic knowledge level question should be expected. If you
do not wish to wade through these types of questions, then you are spending
time in the wrong group.

By the way, top-posting is as common as bottom posting now. Which you use is
a preference of the user and the group, and neither is right or wrong.
Personally, I think trying to enforce bottom posting is somewhat archaic,
like telling someone they can't use their cell phone and must use a
landline. Just because something was once accepted as common practice
doesn't mean it's the best way.

WinXP's built-in firewall is fine at stopping incoming attacks, and
hiding your ports from probes. It doesn't give you any alarms to tell
you that it is working, though. What WinXP's firewall also does not
do, is protect you from any Trojans or spyware that you might download
and install inadvertently. It doesn't monitor out-going traffic at
all, much less block (or at least ask you about) the bad or the
questionable out-going packets. It "assumes" that any applications
sending out-going data are doing what _you_ want them to do.

ZoneAlarm, Kerio, or Sygate are all much better, and are much more
easily configured, and there are a free versions of each readily
available. Even Symantec's Norton Personal Firewall is superior,
although it does take a heavier toll of performance then do ZoneAlarm,
Kerio, or Sygate.

To enable/disable the built-in firewall, Start > Network
Connections > Right-click the connection > Properties > Advanced >

Thanks for your answers. I went where directed, and found
that my Firewall is indeed active.

Amen to that! And BTW, bottom-posting would be a lot more common if people
would learn to bloody TRIM THEIR INCLUDES! I can't count how many times I've
had to scroll through pages of includes just to read a one-line response at
the bottom. At least a top-post avoids that.
